Out of sight out of mind...
For a relationship to continue, its very important to be in sight of each other. No matter how much you try to be in touch, begin far apart, it becomes difficult to maintain that bond. People start looking for new relationships which can keep them happy. Dragging a relationship which can not be more than some talks/chats becomes a liability from some.
For others, a relationship, a bond means just more than some calls and chats. A sense of closeness, a sense of "appana paan" can be sensed from only in one call or conversation. You don't need many conversations to make that out. Others may not understand this kind of feelings. Some are just insensitive to other's feelings...
